Mental Health Awareness: 5 Tips for self care & well-being

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

If you don't know, it's mental health awareness week in the UK. I figured this was a good time to spread some love and talk about the importance of mental health. If you're one of my dedicated blog subscribers, then you know how much I focus on positive mental habits. It's critically important to our lives, yet we don't always cherish our minds the way we should. Life is so busy and it's easy to get caught up in the "haze." Sometimes we are just categorically unaware of what's going on. If we are sad and depressed, lonely or anxious, then it's time to practice some self-love. Here are 5 tips for self-care & well-being for mental health.

1) Meditate

Meditation calms and soothes the mind. Learn to be more present, open your “third eye,” get in touch with your mind, and live more peacefully daily.

Meditating keeps me completely grounded. Whatever struggles I face in life, meditation centers me and changes my mood instantly. I can go from anger or resentment to love and gratitude in a matter of 10 minutes. Being more mindful in your life and taking time to completely unplug arms you with a strength you have never known before. Learn how to meditate and do it now.

2) Reframe unhelpful thoughts

The way we think, feel and behave are linked. Sometimes we develop patterns of thoughts or behaviors that are unhelpful - so recognizing them, and taking steps to think about things differently, can improve your mental health and wellbeing.

As the acronym goes for F.E.A.R., known as false evidence appearing real. We are not our thoughts. Often the anxiety we feel is our fault for imagining imaginary scenarios that as a result bring about more anxiety. By simply making some small changes in our thinking every day we can completely transform our lives the more we make it a daily habit.

Learn to turn negative into positive and you become a true warrior of life

Greatness lies in facing the storm with a smile. We are much stronger than we know and we just have to believe in it.

Instead of thinking "why does this always happen to me?" Think, "what am I learning from this?"

Instead of thinking "the world is evil and depressing," think "life is amazing and abundant."

Instead of thinking "I hate everything," think "there are certain things in life I don't like, but I am grateful for so much more."

3. Get good sleep

Good-quality sleep makes a big difference to how we feel mentally and physically, so it's important to get enough. When people come off angry or upset in the morning, it's often attributed to a lack of good sleep.

A lack of sleep is associated with so many ailments of the body. Not getting enough sleep is attributed to depression, obesity, lower sex drive, and poor immunity.

We need sleep for mental and emotional balance

4 benefits of a good night's sleep

1) Improves your mental focus and concentration

2) Keeps your immune system strong

3) The more sleep you get the more body fat you burn

4) Reduces stress levels

4. Do something for yourself

From enjoying your favorite hobby, learning something new, or simply taking time to relax, it's important to do things that make you happy.

Self-care is critical in life. We give so much energy to our job, our family, our friends, and our community. We're like a dim flame lacking oxygen. Taking care of yourself is paramount. We need recovery. We need time for ourselves physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Doing things for yourself is not selfish. Therefore, go get that massage. Go camping by yourself in the forest. Just get away and unplug.

Reconnect with yourself and regain your energy

5. Get active

Being active is a great way to naturally boost your mood. It increases endorphins and makes you feel better. Do a run or take a nice walk. Go swimming - I love swimming! Or, you can do rock climbing, cycling, or jogging. Whatever it is, just do it.

Motion creates emotion. Naturally boost your mood to avoid depression and sadness. If you're a bit overweight, just go for walks outside. Walking burns fat, raises your mood, and directly benefits your overall health.

There is no excuse. If you have legs, you can get active.

Getting outside, swimming, just being and feeling better in any way drastically transforms your life.

So, use these five tips to enjoy yourself this week and weekend. I guarantee it will make a huge difference for your mental health.

Wishing you guys love and light.
