What are goals in life?
Goals in life are defined as the attainment of everything you want to do in life before dying. Setting goals in life gives you purpose, and they help you to guide your life. Think of life goals as your guideposts. They'll guide you where you want to go, but it's still on you to choose your path and go move forward.
What types of goals are there?
1) Career Goals
2) Financial Goals
3) Health Goals
4) Spiritual Goals
5) Relationship Goals
There are many reasons why people don't accomplish their goals and aspirations. Things like procrastination, listening to other people's opinions or watching too much TV. There are motivational factors, environmental factors, personality factors. However, the top 5 reasons people don't accomplish goals cover all of these categories.
I've found in my life that these are the MAIN reasons that I haven't exactly attained what I wanted to with my goals and objectives. Before I started a business, before I traveled the world, before finding love, I knew I had to change some things about my mentality and focus.
If you struggle with reaching your goals, then these are the top 5 reasons why you may be failing at your goals, and why goals are important.
1) YOU DON'T HAVE A STRONG ENOUGH "WHY"
One of the biggest reasons people fail is because they simply don't have a "why" that they are really attached to. They don't have that deep emotional drive to change something. Maybe they haven't quite suffered enough to change. More often than not it's more about vanity and wants, instead of NEED. A necessity. It has to move from a wish to a must-do.
I need to change my life. I need to do this today. I need to lose weight. The difference between a wish and a must-do is the strength of the desire. Here is an example:
Instead of looking in the mirror and being unhappy with how you look and saying "gosh, I really wish I looked better." Every day, just a little bit annoyed and frustrated, dealing with the same guilty thoughts, it works habitually making you feel bad constantly. Yet, you still don't make the change, cause it's a weak fast-moving thought in your mind, then you move onto the next thing. This very simple throw away statements are just attached to your conscious mind, which can be unfocused and easy to distract. It needs to be rooted in emotion, like real pain and grievance. Things like:
I am absolutely sick and tired of being overweight. Everyday I don't like how I look, feel, and think. I hate not having energy. I hate how uncomforable I feel all the time in private and in public. I want to set a good example for my family or my kids.
These are good reasons. It's more personal and emotion-based. Those reasons create a stronger connection in your subconscious mind. Therefore, it gets cemented, and your brain and neural pathways will keep it in your mind more, even when you're asleep.
When I lost 40 pounds, I was about to become a father. The thought of being an overweight dad and not being able to show up for my family at one of the most crucial points in my life terrified me. So, I then changed.
If it's money, it just can't be "I hate my job and I really wish I earned more money." It's got to be.
Every day I live in fear about money and security. Every day I am anxious about the future. I am scared and I hate feeling this way. I want the type of life where I have complete freedom and control over my life. I want to master making money so that I can be happy. I want to make money because I want to travel. I want to make money because I want to provide a good life for my family. I don't want to suffer anymore.
It's really the concept of goals versus values. What do you value? Maybe that's why you're not meeting the goal. Maybe you don't actually value the goal based on your personal values.
You know sometimes until we are at our lowest points in life and forced to change, do we actually make that change. But, we don't have to wait. We can understand why it needs to happen, get more clear and organized, then take action with a new focus. Work on your why's. Make a list.
2) YOU DON'T MAKE TIME TO FOCUS
Goals or dreams in life only happen when we take action. Goals without a plan simply don't work. People spend more time planning vacations or looking at their social media feeds than they do to focus on their goals. They think that because they simply set an intention and thought about what they want, that it was enough. It's not. You have to keep going.
It's time to break out the journal. Schedule in the time. Put an hour timer on your phone and get started. Then you know you are setting aside focused time to do it.
So, instead of the daily night ritual of "Netflix and chill," start making windows of time when you're going to focus on your goals.
Every Monday & Thursday night I will make 1 hour of time in the evening to evaluate my goals and check my progress.
3) YOU CREATE WEAK GOALS
Weak goals create weak results. Good goals need to be specific and measurable. That means it has an end date, and some sort of figure involved. Here are some goals and objectives examples:
I will lose 20 pounds in 2 months through healthy eating and intermittent fasting
I will increase my income by $30,000 in the next 6 months by starting an online business through Amazon FBA.
When you create goals this way, it creates more clarity and focus, making it feel more believable, therefore making it more likely to be achieved.
4) YOUR GOALS AREN'T ALIGNED TO YOUR PURPOSE OR PASSION
The most successful people in the world almost always have a deep love for what they do. It's known as a "labor of love."
From Tony Robbins to Elon Musk or J.K. Rowling. They wake up every day with passion. Even if they weren't millionaires or billionaires, they probably would still be doing exactly what they're doing now at some level.
Living a purpose-centered life gives you the drive needed to accomplish your goals. You have to love something so much that you generally do it for free in your spare time. Next, all you need to do is figure out how to leverage what you live into a means of making money.
WANT TO MAKE A CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE TODAY?
Remember that the people who make the most money are people who bring the most value to other people. Too many people focus on the process of making money rather than adding value to people's lives.
Money is the outcome of bringing value. So, what do you love? How can you bring value to other people through what you love?
5) YOU KEEP WAITING TO START YOUR GOALS
This is the ultimate procrastinator. You may say:
I'll wait until next month to start. I'm just not ready yet. Or, i'll wait until Monday to start. Then, it's the beginning of the week when i'm really focused and i'm more likely to do it.
No! DO NOT WAIT. If you truly want it and you truly value it, you have to just start now. Today.
You have to take the first step. Results beget more results. People often overestimate what they can do in 30 days, let alone a year. Just focus on the process of becoming what it is you want to be or do, and forget about the outcome. Then you're more likely to become it, rather than simply wishing it.
Wishing you much happiness, success, and fulfillment.
